Although film installation does require patience and some dexterity, you may want to consider
installing your own film on windows and doors that are not over-sized. SunShield will supply
the sun control film, the installation materials and instructions -- all but the energy and
desire!
Do it yourself film is available in silver, neutral, gray and clear. There are four densities of
coloring, i.e., clear, medium, and light. We carry many films, but not all colors and/or
densities are suitable for double pane or thermal pane glass and some circumstances where there
are certain types of outside shading (overhangs, parts of buildings, etc.) Film can be ordered
in 36", 48" and 60" wide rolls. Cost of the film is dependent on the color, density, width and
length and if we are cutting to the approximate size of each window. Call or

A complete sample book with do it yourself film and specs is available for five dollars.
You may have all the tools needed, but if you want a complete do it yourself tool kit, it can be ordered for
$32. The kit includes the following: Tape measure, break-away disposable knife,
professional 6" wide cleaner/scraper and 3 double edge blades, pint-sized spray bottle,
rubber squeegee and a five-way edge guide for uniform trimming. Simple graphic instructions and
a professional installers video tape are included.
On most modern homes with thermalpane windows, the ideal film (S-60) is a light natural gray
silver which rejects 99+% of the ultra violet rays, 46% of the total solar energy, and minimally
changes the tone of the window glass. In most cases, you would only know it has been installed
by comparing one piece of glass to the other. The medium silver film (S-35) rejects the ultra
violet rays and 65% of the total solar energy while eliminating some glare and returning 5 to
10 % of heat loss due to cold glass during the winter time. There is also a fair measure of
privacy from the outside while sacrificing none of the enhanced inside to outside view.
To gain maximum solar energy reduction (78%) and elimination of ultra violet rays, (S15) silver
film also provides maximum privacy while not obstructing daytime viewing from the inside to the
outside. Reduction of winter heat loss due to cold glass will also be maximized. Take note
that the S-35 is somewhat more visible from the outside and the S-15 does provide a mirrored
finish.
All sun control films render the glass shatter resistant, so that, just as a windshield of a car
won't break into small pieces and shards and then fly all over the place, film holds broken
glass in place until it can be dealt with properly.

Window Film Installation Instructions
Tools:
Scissors, Tape Measure, Razor Knife, Ruler, Plastic Card Squeegee, Spray Bottle, and Paper Towel.
Steps:
- Tinted Sun Control Film (not decorator film) may be installed either horizontally or vertically since there is no grain or pattern. The master roll is 60” (five feet) wide by up to 100 feet in length.
- Clean the areas to which the film is to be applied, removing all traces of dirt, grime, grease, etc.
- Carefully measure the height and width of the glass surface. Allow +/- 3/4" extra material on each side of the film and cut the film to size
- Create your own wetting solution by adding a few drops (like a very short squeeze) of very mild detergent (baby shampoo or dish detergent like "Joy") into a 32" spray bottle filled with water.
- Lay the cut to size Sun Control Film on a clean flat surface with the release liner up, or have someone hold the piece to be applied for you. Remove the release liner and spray the now exposed adhesive surface thoroughly with the wetting solution.
Apply a generous amount of the wetting solution to the glass. The wetting solution prevents the film from sticking to the surface immediately, thereby allowing you more time in which to properly position the film.
- Place the now wet film onto the clean glass surface. Wet the face of the film to be squeegeed. Use the plastic card squeegee and squeegee from the center out towards the edges to remove any air bubbles and wetting solution. Double check that the film is flat and smooth with no remaining air bubbles and water .
- If any bubbles are not removed after Step 4, then squeegee them out towards the closest edge.
- Trim the excess film from the edges of the surface. It is ideal to cut in one continuous movement, using the ruler and razor knife. Use the paper towels for cleaning the glass surface and for the absorption of excess wetting solution around the edges.
- The film may take a few days to dry in order for it to completely adhere to the glass surface.
Precautions:
- The surface to which the film will be applied should be very clean, free of dirt, dust particles and silicone. Make sure there are no dry spots on the film prior to placing it onto the glass.
- Take care that when removing the release liner the film does not roll over onto itself. It will stick together and is difficult to pull apart. Wet the film as the liner is removed!
Tip to remove liner:
To separate the liner from the film take two pieces of scotch tape and stick them opposite each other at one corner…then pull these two pieces of tape apart and the liner will separate from the film. The adhesive surface will now be exposed. Wet this adhesive surface. Do not let the film fall upon itself as it will stick if not wet and it will be hard to separate!

DEFINITIONS
SHADING COEFFICIENT is the ratio of solar heat gain through a given
glazing system, to that of a standard glass pane, under the same test conditions. It is a
measure of the sun control capability. The lower the shading coefficient, the more
efficient the glazing system.
% TOTAL SOLAR ENERGY REJECTED is the ratio of the amount of total
solar energy in the full solar wavelength range (300-2,100nm) that is prevented from passing
through the glazing system to the amount of total solar energy falling on that glazing
system.
% TOTAL SOLAR ENERGY REFLECTED is the ratio of the amount of total
solar energy in the full solar wavelength range (300-2,100nm) that is directly reflected by
the glazing system, to the amount of total solar energy falling on that glazing system.
% TOTAL SOLAR ENERGY ABSORBED is the ratio of the amount of total
solar energy in the full solar wavelength range (300-2,100nm) that is directly absorbed by
the glazing system, to the amount of total solar energy falling on that glazing system.
% TOTAL SOLAR ENERGY TRANSMITTED is the ratio of the amount of
total solar energy in the full solar wavelength range (300-2,100nm) that passes directly
through the glazing system, to the amount of total solar energy falling on that glazing system.
% VISIBLE LIGHT REFLECTED (VLR) is the ratio of visible solar energy
in the range of (380-780nm) that is reflected by a given glazing system, to the total visible
solar energy falling on the system.
% VISIBLE LIGHT TRANSMITTED (VLT) is the ratio of visible solar
energy in the range of (380-780nm) that passes through a given glazing system, to the total
visible solar energy falling on the system.
ULTRAVIOLET TRANSMISSION (UV) is the ratio of solar energy in the
range of (300-380nm) that is transmitted by a glazing system to the total solar UV energy
falling on the glazing. NOTE: Ultraviolet is one portion of the total solar energy spectrum
which greatly contributes to fading and deterioration of fabrics and furnishings.
EMISSIVITY is a measure of the ability of a product to reflect
long wave room radiant energy. The lower the emissivity, the higher the ability of the
material in question to retain the room's heat.
U-FACTOR ("U") is a measure of the rate of heat conductivity of
a glazing system, and is independent of solar radiation. When multiplied by the difference
between indoor and outdoor temperatures in F, it gives the amount of heat conducted in
BTU's/hour/square foot glazing. The lower the "U" Factor, the better the heat loss reduction.
